Henry J. DeForest painted at least four canvasses of the Kootenay River in the period 1899-1901, including a commission for the president of the Bonnington Falls Power Company. DeForest was quoted as describing Bonnington as "the Niagara of the west". An article in the 20 April 1901 edition of The Province newspaper gave a glowing review of the painting. These falls no longer exist due to damming of the river for hydro-electric generation, making this a particularly important historic painting.
