Born in Michigan, Francis James Burd arrived in Vancouver, by way of Winnipeg and Whitehorse, in 1899 [?], later becoming managing director and president of the Vancouver Province newspaper.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Vancouver General Hospital for 25 years, assisted in the work of St. LukeÕs Home, KingÕs DaughterÕs Home, Resthaven, Welfare Federation, B. C. Cancer Institute, and Treasurer of the Vancouver Art Gallery, The Fairbridge Farm, and one of the Governors of the University of British Columbia. All these culminating in the receipt of the "Good Citizen" Medal for the City of Vancouver in 1938.
His personal collection of books makes up a subtantial part of the Grand Lodge of British Columbia and Yukon Library.
