Sir William S. Gilbert
[William Schwenck Gilbert]
November 18, 1836 - May 29, 1911
William Schwenck Gilbert, militiaman, barrister, librettist and author of the Bab Ballads published in 1869, is best remembered for his twenty-five year partnership with Arthur Sullivan which produced a total of fourteen comic operas.
Gilbert was knighted by Edward VII in 1907 and died of a heart attack in 1911, at age 74, brought on from rescuing a drowning woman.
