Thomas Clement Douglas was born in Camelon, Falkirk, Scotland, immigrating to Winnipeg with his family in 1910. An apprentice printer in Winnipeg from 1919 to 1924, he graduated as a Baptist minister in 1930 when he took up a pastorate in Weyburn, Saskatchewan.
He was a member of the Canadian House of Commons for the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) from 1935 to 1942. In 1944, Douglas was elected the Prime Minister of Saskatchewan for the next for 17 years. There he implemented a variety of socialist programmes, such as the creation of Medicare. National leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) from 1961, in 1963 he was elected again on the federal level and remained in federal politics until he retired in 1979.
