Vechnaya Rossiya "Eternal Russia" (1988) Detail
Ilya Sergeyevich Glazunov (1930/06/10 - )
Commemorating the millennium of Slavic Christianity, Eternal Russia depicts a gallery of figures from Russian history, some 300 distinctive faces arrayed around the crucified Jesus. Leo Tolsoy wears a board depicting the masonic square and compasses and the phrase, НЕПРОТИВЛЕ́НИЕ, or 'non-resistance'. Although Tolstoy was not a Freemason, his depiction of Freemasonry in War and Peace has lead many Russians to assume that he was.
Canvas, oil. 300cm x 600cm. Glazunov Gallery, Moscow
