Anti-Flag, an American political hardcore punk band formed in 1988 in Pittsburgh, has adopted as its chief symbol the "gunstar", designed by California graphic artist John Yates. The gunstar is a star with points formed by five broken M-16 assault rifles. It debuted on the cover of their album, Mobilize (2002), and also appeared on the cardboard cover of For Blood and Empire (2006) where the pieces could be pushed out to form a stencil. Anti-Flag puts the symbol on much of their merchandise, and it is not uncommon for fans to wear it as a tattoo.
