Within his lifetime Robert Burns wrote only four collections: the Kilmarnock edition, Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, published on July 31, 1786 contained 44 poems; the Edinburgh edition, Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, published in 1787, was an enlarged edition with an additional 22 poems; Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, published in February 1793 in two volumes, was the last edition edited by Burns who added another 19 poems; Scots Musical Museum, containing 200 songs and fragments in six volumes was edited by James Johnson between 1787 and 1803; and
Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs for the Voice, was released in eight parts between 1793 and 1818, edited by George Thomson with more than 70 songs.
