Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Based on author David Grann's 2017 book, Killers, which details the "Osage Reservation Murders", the film is relatively true to the historical accounts, although Scorsese includes several fictional scenes highlighting William Hale's membership in Grayhorse Lodge No. 24 and Barney McBride's membership in Elks Lodge No. 15. The historical Barney McBride was an Elk, and William Hale had been initiated into Grayhorse Lodge 124 in 1907 and was expelled in 1926 after being arrested for the murder of Anna Brown.
Why Scorsese chose to emphasize these irrelevant details is known only to himself. McBride's affiliation with the Elks is emphasized on several occasions [01:02:30], as is Hale's affiliation with Freemasonry.
In an extended scene inside Grayhorse Masonic Lodge No. 124, Hale identifies his personal power with his masonic membership:
"I am a thirty-second degree mason. I am imbued with confidence, trust and responsibility, among other things. You know what that is?
He then strikes Ernest on the backside with a heavy paddle marked with the masonic square and compasses. This scene figures prominently in the film's trailer.
Other connexions are made to Freemasonry, with doctors and lawyers involved in the murders having their offices in the lodge building, and the owner of a dance school who conveniently kills a potential witness calling Hales "brother."[02:17:00]
