Outlander (2017)
In episode five of season 3 of this fantasy romance, a masonic square and compasses emblem briefly is shown on James Alexander Malcolm Fraser's printshop sign in a scene set in 1765 Edinburgh. [00:50:40] The sign is seen again in episode six. Based on a series of novels written by Diana Gabaldon, Fraser's Freemasonry also plays a significant role in the books.
Tom Jackson.
Later, in episode twelve, mention is made of a freemason. Kenneth MacIver [James McAnerney] (employed by Jamie's cousin, the owner of the Artemis, the sloop Claire and Jamie travel in to Jamaica) says to James Fraser: "I'd like to introduce you to a freemason who's acquainted with almost everyone on the island, and may know something of your nephew." [00:33.05]
These two references to Freemasonry may be foreshadowing for later episodes, or they may be further examples of an all-too-common internet era phenomenon—passive brand hijacking—not with the intent of attacking or assuming Freemasonry's identity, but with leveraging Freemasonry's name recognition value.
In an unrelated scene in season 4, episode 13 Mohawk leader, Tehwahsehkwe, played by Tom Jackson, has been erroneously reported as wearing a right angle square as an earring [00:07:00]. While clearly not square, the costume choice may have been an intentional allusion to Chief Joseph Brant.
