The Maltese Falcon (1941)
In the original novel police lieutenant Dundy is described as wearing a "secret-society-emblem". In the movie adaptation none of the characters wear any lapel pins with the exception of Joel Cairo, played by Peter Lorre. The pin appears to be that of a Commandeur of the Légion d'honneur and is not masonic. Equally unrelated to Freemasonry is a fictional history reference: "In 1539, the Knight Templars [sic]of Malta, paid tribute to Charles V of Spain by sending him a Golden Falcon encrusted from beak to claw with rarest jewels...".
Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet. Directed by John Huston. Writing credits Dashiell Hammett (novel) John Huston (screenplay). 101 min. USA. English. Black and White. Mono.
