The expression continued to be popular for several decades, often appearing in film noir. In Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950), racketeer Tommy Scalise (Gary Merrill) tells a henchman : "Get out a pencil and write this down so if he's watching you, he'll know it's on the square." [01:18:00]
