Cartel Land (2015)
Winner of the Special Jury Award for Cinematography at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, Cartel Land follows two vigilante leaders, one on either side of the Mexican/USA border, as they attempt to defend their communities against illegal drug cartels. In one scene, Dr. José Manuel Mireles Valverde squeezes the knee of a woman while propositioning her. He is wearing a large ring displaying a square and compasses emblem.[01:17:30] The Mexican state of Michoacán has a long history of masonic activity, and Dr. Mireles may well be a Freemason, however inappropriate his wearing of masonic emblems might be.
An interview published on Youtube by MonitorExpresso on 25 August 2015 showed Dr. Mireles wearing a polo shirt embroidered with the masonic square and compasses emblem. There is also another scene in the documentary where, during a meeting of village elders, a book with the square and compasses emblem is seen on the table. [00:14:20] The intent of these depictions, if any, is unknown.
