According to the Internet Movie Database 1,130 movies have included male characters named Mason (417 have included female characters named Mason). The ratio of movies with a male character named Mason (1,130) to movies with a male character named Smith (2,344) is roughly 1/2. Compare this with the ratio of 1/10 for the names Mason and Smith in the North American population, and the use of the name Mason would appear to be disproportionate.
For those interested in statistical analysis, a textfile of movies without masonic references is also available on this website. A list of film characters named Mason is available on the Internet Movie Database
The ratio of the occurence of the surname Smith to Mason in film is a little less than two and a half to one (.40171384056) whereas in the general North American population the ratio is almost fifteen to one (.0675944334). Whether this has any statistical relevence or significance is another question. As a comparison, the ratio of the occurance of the surname Smith to Jones in film is almost one to one whereas in the general population it’s slightly greater than one and a half to one.
