Born François Marie Arouet in Paris, Voltaire was the embodiment of eighteenth century Enlightenment. Author of Lettres philosophiques 1734, Candide 1759 and the Dictionnaire philosophique 1764, his ideas were an important influence on the intellectual climate leading to the French Revolution.
