Danton was a French Revolutionary leader and orator, often credited as the chief force in the overthrow of the French monarchy and in the establishment of the first French Republic on 21 September 1792.
Enlisting in the civic guard in July 1789, he was elected president of the Cordeliers district in October. The following spring he founded the Club of the Cordeliers and later became a member of the Club of the Jacobins. Active throughout the revolutionary period, on April 7, 1793 he became a member of the Committee of Public Safety, effectively running the government until July 10. From that time onwards he became a moderating voice, disapproving of terrorist repression. Arrested the night of March 29, 1794 by the Revolutionary tribunal, his moderate views led to his death at the guillotine the following month.
