The compasses in Dürer's woodcuts

ASTRONOMER. Titlepage to Messahalah, De scientia motus orbis, printed by Johann Weissenburger, Nuremberg 1504.
Earlier use of compasses as a symbol for the act of creation can be found in medieval manuscripts and early Bibles. Also note Albrecht Dürer’s Melencolia, and Blake’s Ancient of Days Measuring Time.
